Torrential rain pounds eastern, central Japan, leaving 1 dead

Torrential rain lashed the Kanto and Tokai regions overnight and in the predawn hours of Friday, leaving one person in Aichi Prefecture dead and three missing, while about 500,000 households were advised to take shelter.

Osaka Toin rolls into semifinals at Koshien

NISHINOMIYA, Hyogo Pref. (Kyodo) Keigo Hagihara and Rikiya Sano drove in two runs apiece Thursday as Osaka Toin beat Toho of Aichi Prefecture 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals of the National High School Baseball Championship. Hagihara hit a pair of sacrifice flies and Sano had an RBI single and a run-scoring double, helping Osaka Toin to a 7-0 lead through six innings. The Osaka powerhouse held off Toho’s late rally sparked by a Kodai Oyake two-run homer in the eighth. Read the full story
