U.S. cyclists demand apology from USOC regarding mask incident

NEW YORK (AP) The four American cyclists who arrived for last month’s Beijing Games wearing black masks and were subsequently ordered to apologize for offending the host nation are seeking an apology from the U.S. Olympic Committee. In a letter sent to the leadership group of the Athletes Advisory Council, an attorney for the four cyclists — Michael Friedman, Sarah Hammer, Bobby Lea and Jennie Reed — not only asked the USOC to apologize, but said the flap was “emotionally devastating” and… Read the full story

Furyk at 12 under for BMW clubhouse lead

ST. LOUIS (AP) Jim Furyk quietly pumped his fist when his final putt of a marathon day disappeared in the cup. Even though it was for bogey, this was cause for a small celebration Saturday at the BMW Championship. He played 36 holes over 10 hours on a soggy course that made it feel as though he were walking through sand. MIZUNAMI, Gifu Pref. (Kyodo) Erina Hara and Kuniko Maeda both shot 6-under-par 66s to grab a share of the lead after the first round of the Golf 5 Ladies on Friday. Hara, winner of the NEC Karuizawa 72 Golf Tournament last month, made seven birdies against one bogey while Maeda, winless in her eighth year on the Japan LPGA tour, carded six birdies in a bogey-free round at Mizunami Country Club. Fujita snatches Golf 5 Ladies title

MIZUNAMI, Gifu Pref. (Kyodo) Saiki Fujita upstaged Women’s British Open champion Shin Ji Yai with a final-round charge Sunday, shooting a 5-under-par 67 to pull off a come-from-behind victory at the Golf 5 Ladies. Fujita, who began the day two strokes behind overnight leader Shin, tallied five birdies through 12 holes and went on to claim her third career title at 13-under 203 at Mizunami Country Club.
